We never really quite sure how much Gelsomina really understands in terms of adults mind. Yet she’s got the heart, and she’s the one point of redempion for Zampanò, who’s a brutal man, angry at the world, angry at himself, violent against everyone. So much of the picture takes place in the outside world, in the grotesque and hostile world still reeling from the war. But what is so lasting about the picture is the humour and the compassion that’s found in that grotesque world, through Gelsomina and through Zampanò. And it’s the classic Fellini’s celebration for life: it’s called ‘The Road’ and on the road they go to the seashore of course, there are weddings, there are carnivals and piazzas, it’s a metaphor for living, a metaphor for life [...] (Martin Scorsese, 2013)
